Design and Display

Both Infinix S5 and Hot 8 comes with glass on the front, plastic frame, and plastic back. From the polished back cover to the vertical arrangement of cameras, you can easily mistake them for each other until you look at the position of the Infinix S5 quad-rear flash; and that's when you notice that the Infinix Hot 8 has just three cameras and a quad-rear flash.

Up from the front, Infinix Hot 8 sports a waterdrop display, which makes it look like a 2019 or 2018 smartphone. And that doesn't mean it's completely out of the game, in fact, many people take drastic moves by hiding the notch on their Android phones; but you may have the Dot-in display of the Infinix S5 now, in 2021, without feeling outdated. In terms of screen sizes and resolutions, they both features a 6.6" HD+ IPS screen with a 20:9 aspect ratio and a resolution of 720*1600 pixels.

Performance

Performance is a major decider when it comes to choosing your new daily driver. The MediaTek Helio P22 powers the Infinix S5, with 64GB/128GB of storage. On the other hand, Infinix Hot 8 rocks the MediaTek A22 processor, with 2GB RAM + 32GB storage.

If you're looking for a more pocket-friendly smartphone, you might end up with the Hot 8 because of its lower storage option, since you can expand both devices with an SD card. But the Infinix S5 is the winner here for its large 6GB of RAM of 128GB of storage if you wish to max it out.

Software

Both Infinix Hot 8 and Infinix S5 run Android 9 Pie out of the box, but Infinix S5 comes with the improved XOS version 5.5. The difference between XOS 5.5 and 5.0 isn't significantly much, but you get an improved UI and performance, Smart Panel, improved Game Mode, and other new features too.

On the other hand, Infinix Hot 8 comes with a DIRAC sound mode, which, when activated, boosts the sound quality of the loudspeaker for a better listening experience.

Cameras

The Infinix S5 simply takes the lead here with its quad-camera system containing a 16MP primary camera, a 5MP wide-angle/macro camera, a 2MP depth camera, and an AI lens camera. It even takes it up a notch with its brilliant 32MP selfie camera placed inside the Infinity-O display.

You get a triple-rear camera setup on the Infinix Hot 8, which is of lesser megapixels than the Infinix S5. It features a 13MP primary camera, a 2MP depth camera for nice Bokeh and edge detection, and an AI lens (QVGA). It also sports an 8MP camera placed inside the waterfall display, with a single flash to brighten up your face in low-lighting conditions.

Though the highest megapixels are not always the better, you'll easily notice the difference in quality when comparing the two phones. And because the Infinix S5 comes with a wide-angle camera doubling up as a macro camera, the Infinix Hot 8 has lost two camera modes already.

Besides the camera hardware, Infinix S5 has more camera prowess than the Infinix Hot 8, especially with its 32MP selfie camera.

Battery

Infinix Hot 8 easily takes the crown here for having the larger battery. Being a 5,000mAh large battery, it can serve you for an entire day without needing to recharge it. Although it's not a wide gap from the Infinix S5 with a 4,000mAh battery, the difference speaks in daily usage. As per charging, both devices come with 10W charging, so don't expect a full recharge in an hour, or even two.

Infinix Hot 8 vs. Infinix S5: Which should you buy?

The Infinix Hot 8 is not as expensive as the Infinix S5, but the difference is clearly seen in the design, performance, camera, storage options, and software, at least on paper. But the large 5000mAh battery for Infinix Hot 8 is nice if you care about power; since both devices offer the same charging speed.

The Infinix S5 is the better pick if the budget is not a problem; you get better cameras, better software experience and features, more storage, and RAM if you want them.
