How to fix Instagram camera not working on Android

Try these fixes when your Instagram camera won't let you share your latest looks!

  1. Confirm your phone's camera is working
  2. Check Instagram camera permissions
  3. Reset the Instagram app
  4. Update the Instagram app
  5. Uninstall & Reinstall Instagram
  6. Update your phone’s software
  7. Reset your device

Confirm your phone's camera is working

First things first, we've got to confirm your phone's camera works normally. That's how we can diagnose if the problem is happening on your phone generally, or it's just the Instagram app.

Now, all you need to do is to open the native Camera app on your phone and try taking some pictures/videos. If the system camera app is not working as well, that might be a general problem you need to tackle on its own. And we recommend you restart your phone first. Then if that didn’t work, you may need to seek professional help.

On the other hand, if your native camera app works, follow the remaining tips below to fix the Instagram camera not working on your phone.

Update the Instagram app

And before we continue, we want to ensure you’re using the latest version of the Instagram app. If not, we recommend you update your app now.

As things get improved over time, using an outdated app may pose issues because of bugs or glitches that need to be addressed. However, developers are almost restless and are working on improvements now and then. So, chances are that they've fixed the Instagram not working problem you're facing on your device. All you need is to update your Instagram app.

Here’s how:

  1. Launch the Play Store app on your phone
  2. Tap your profile icon at the top right
  3. Hit Manage apps & device
  4. Tap Updates available to see all apps pending update
  5. Find Instagram on the list, then tap the Update button if you see it there.

Launch Instagram now to see if the camera is working. Or it’s still the same issue? Try another solution below.

Check Instagram camera permissions.

If you've been on Android for the past few hours (just to say), you should be well aware of the hosts of permissions you're required to grant when you open an app for the first time. These permissions include the camera, location, microphone, contacts, etc.

If an app needs access to hardware or privacy feature, then you must grant it to work. And for the Instagram camera not working, you need to ensure you've permitted the app to access your phone's camera. Otherwise, it won't work.

The same applies to the Instagram video call camera not working… all you need, for a start, is to grant the camera and microphone permissions. Then other things may follow.

Follow the steps below to grant the necessary permissions to make the Instagram camera work well on your phone.

  1. Launch your device’s Settings app
  2. Click the Apps & notifications tab, then tap the link to “See all apps”
  3. From there, locate Instagram and click on it.
  4. And then, tap
  5. Finally, ensure both the switch for the Camera and Microphone are toggled on.

You may restart the Instagram app now to see if the camera works well.

Reset the Instagram app

If double-checking the Instagram permissions felt like a waste of time (though it's not), what you need to do now is to reset the Instagram app. Basically, all you've got to do is to clear its cache and data.

Here’s how:

  1. Launch your device’s Settings app
  2. Click the Apps & notifications tab, then tap the link to “See all apps”
  3. From there, locate Instagram and click on it.
  4. This time, select Storage & cache
  5. Tap the Clear cache button, then select Clear data as well and confirm it.

Relaunch Instagram and sign in to your account again. Try taking some shots/videos with the Instagram camera to see if it's working now.

For the unaware, every Android app stores its cache files temporarily to reduce loading time and improve its performance. However, these cache files may cause trouble sometimes when corrupted or too much. Hence, clearing them is the way out.

If the Instagram camera still not working after resetting it, try another solution below.

Uninstall & Reinstall Instagram

Now, the issue is getting serious than we thought. But you don't have to panic, though. Have you tried deleting and reinstalling the Instagram app? Kindly do so now.

Sometimes, you just have to start from scratch, and that's what's happening here. It's not a tedious process, though. Just delete Instagram on your phone and reinstall it from the Play Store.

Here’s how:

  1. Find the Instagram app icon in your app drawer
  2. Long-press on it, then select Uninstall
  3. Now, we recommend you restart your phone.
  4. After that, visit the Play Store to search and install Instagram again

Update your phone’s software

Similarly to updating the Instagram app (as said in the second tip above), updating your phone's software can fix the Instagram camera issue on your device.

Why? Your current OS version may be buggy, or the latest version of Instagram needs the latest feature/patch that's missing from your OS version. So, you need to strike a balance by keeping both your app and operating system up-to-date.

Here’s how to update your phone’s software:

  1. Once again, launch the Settings
  2. Click on the System
  3. Now, select System Update (or Software Update)
  4. From there, you will find an option to Check for updates (or anything similar.) Tap it and wait for a few seconds to fetch the latest updates.
  5. If an update is available, Download & Install it, then restart your phone afterward.

Reset your device

Usually, the last resort to fixing most (software-related) smartphone issues is to perform a factory reset. And if nothing else could regulate the Instagram camera not working on your device, then the last you'd want to do is reset your phone.

Note: Unfortunately, resetting your phone comes with a sacrifice – it'll erase all your data (files, photos, videos, apps, etc.) So, before you embark on resetting your phone to fix the Instagram camera not working, ensure your backup your device first to be on the safe side.

Once your data is safe, you may follow the steps below to perform a factory reset.

  1. For the last time, open your phone’s Settings
  2. Tap on System
  3. Select Reset options
  4. Then, tap Factory data reset from the options.
  5. Confirm your action and your password, then let your device clean itself.

Maybe we have to tell you this: your phone will take time to reboot once reset. So, chill while your phone gives itself an overdue environmental service.

Conclusion

While factory reset could be the last resort to fix the Instagram camera not working on your phone, it's always not the best option. If none of the first six solutions above could fix the problem, we'd recommend you wait for a while for Instagram to resolve the issue.

Sometimes, it might be a general problem, and Instagram is aware of it and working on a fix. So, you may need to wait for a while and monitor the Play Store for the latest Instagram update.

But for now, you could import an existing photo/video from your device's storage rather than using the Instagram camera.

Do you dig that?
