how to fix gmail not working

Clear browser cache

A cache is a copy of your visit to a website saved on your browser for a subsequent visit, so the browser would not have to reload the whole page over again. A cache is not peculiar to browsers these days. Almost all Mobile Applications now have cache enabled, including your Gmail app browser. However, let's breakdown how to clear the cache on the Gmail app browser:

  • Go to the "Setting" icon on your phone.
  • Click on the "Apps & Notification" and look for the Gmail
  • Click on the Gmail app.
  • Locate the "storage and cache" and click on it
  • A new page will pop up showing "Clear Storage" and "Clear Cache," select "Clear Cache," and everything is done.

However, not all phones are the same; your phone may be "App Manager" if you do not see App & Notification.

Restart the phone

When your Gmail is not working, you can also try to restart your phone because mobile phones sometimes also experience overheating, which causes them to slow down. The procedure is to hold down your power button, an option to "shut down" or "restart" will pop up. Select "restart" and wait for your phone to reboot. Once your phone is up again, try to access your Gmail and see if it will function.

Download the latest Gmail app

Gmail app may not work if you are not using the updated version on your phone. You may need to update it through a simple step. Look for "Google Play Store" on your phone represented by a slant triangle shape to update your Gmail app. Play Store is always internally installed on every android phone, so it is straightforward to locate. However, let's breakdown the procedure for easy understanding:

  • Click on the Play Store on your phone icon.
  • Go to the "search" box and type "Gmail app latest version," and press the "Go" button on your keypad or the search icon represented by a microscope shape.
  • The Gmail app will be loaded immediately, depending on your internet connection. Select the "Update" option and wait for the process to finish. Once the process is done, you can re-access your Gmail and see if it will work.

Check the network connect

Many factors can cause your Gmail not to function on your phone, and sometimes it could be your network provider that is not stable with an internet connection. You can check your internet connection in two simple different ways:

Uninstall and reinstall the Gmail

This is the easiest thing to do, uninstall your Gmail app and reinstall it. Let's breakdown “uninstall” and “reinstall process.”

How to Uninstall Gmail

  • Go to Settings on your phone.
  • Select the "App & Notification" option, where you'll see options
  • Select the "uninstall" and wait for the process to finish.

How to Reinstall

  • Go to the Play Store on your phone.
  • Type Gmail on the search icon and press "search" or "go" depending on your phone keypad setting
  • Once the internet loads the Gmail app, select install and wait while the process runs on your phone, you can start again by logging in to your Gmail account once the installation is done.

Sign out of account

You may need to sign-out of your account and hold on a bit before signing-in again. Below is the quickstep to do it:

  • Click on the extension at the right side of your Gmail app, where there is a picture icon.
  • Tap on the "manage account on this device."
  • Click on the remove account, and your account will be signed out. There you have it, all done and removed.

CHECK STATUS OF GMAIL

Sometimes, your Gmail may not be working because of the status mode, and until you change it, you may not receive a notification. The notification status mode may be "None," which means you do not want email disturbance. Even if you have more than one Gmail account on your phone, here is how to reset it:

  • Open your Gmail app on your phone.
  • Tap the menu on the top left
  • From the indicator, locate the setting and click on it.
  • You'll be navigated to the general setting; tap on the Gmail account.
  • Tap on the notification and select "All" from the option.

Another thing to do is click on the inbox notifications option and select the "Notify for every message," which activates sound or vibration for any message coming into your Gmail.

Gmail Sync Settings

When syncing is on in Gmail, new emails and notifications come in automatically; otherwise, you have to refresh. Also, when you log in to your mail with a new device (your phone, for example), your extensions from the previous device come in and start doing their works without having to install them again. Everything you save on Google comes in automatically. You will even be automatically logged in to other Google services like YouTube. Here is how to put on the sync or check:

  • Open your Gmail app
  • Tap on the "manage account."
  • Locate the automatic sync data. Turn it on by sliding the icon to the right.

Please note that this step mentioned is on the latest Gmail app version; yours could be different if you have not upgraded. Usually, the old version is visible if you click on the three horizontal lines icon on the top left side where functions like inbox, sent, spam is located.

Check the phone storage

Low storage on the phone can cause your Gmail account not to work because the app needs space to function. You can get it solved by clicking on the setting icon's storage and clear the internal storage. For easy breakdown, follow these steps:

  • Click on the setting icon.
  • Locate the phone storage and click on it
  • Clear your internal shared storage by clicking on the brush icon, allow your phone to scan for junks, and clear it off.

Also, remove apps, pictures, or documents you no longer need by tapping the internal shared storage and proceeding to delete files you don't need.
