It's not a nice moment at all when you try to charge your phone and you notice that your phone is not charging, or maybe it takes longer than it used to be. As far as it is concerned, there are few known things that can make the problem spring up in the first place - it might just be a bug interfering with the system, or it's a hardware issue blocking the connection between your phone and the power supply. Here are some few solutions put together for you about why my phone is not charging.

why is my phone not charging

Make sure you are using the original charger or data cable to charge your phone.

Even before progressing to any other solution in this post, the first thing to check if the phone is not charging is the data cable and the charging brick (charger). Make sure you are charging your phone with the original charger, preferably the charger that came out of the box with your phone. If possibly the boxed charger has spoiled, make sure you are using the original charger and data cable manufactured by your brand or a reliable brand like Oraimo to charge your phone. Charging with a fake charger can cause your phone not to charge or charge abnormally.

Confirm the connection between the power socket, charger, and charging port.

If you're using the original charger and your phone still wouldn't charge, the next thing to try is checking if there is a good connection between your data cable, charger, charging port, and power socket.

  • Check the power socket:

There's a probability that your charger and the charging cable is good, but the problem is coming from the power source. If you're charging from a wall socket, try shaking the charging brick to check if the phone will charge. If the phone is not charging, try using another socket, or plug in another appliance to the socket and check if it will work. If it's not working, then move to another socket or try charging over the USB port on your computer.

  • Check the data cable and charging adapter.

If you find your phone won’t charge, the other things to check is the data cable and the charging adapter. Most especially, the data cable is more vulnerable to damage after wrapping and unwrapping it several times, using it in different occasions - both comfortable and uncomfortable, stretching the cable, etc.,

If you have some cables lying around, you can try swapping them to your charging adapter and check if it will charge. You should also try charging the phone over USB on your computer to check if the cables are actually working.

The charging adapter may also be the cause of the problem. To be safe from this, try charging with another charging adapter (with the same cable).

  • Check the charging port

After confirming a working data cable and charging adapter, the next thing to check is the charging port when you find Phone is not charging when plugged in . There are chances that the charging port is filled with dirt - commonly by accumulated dust or lint from your pocket that is obstructing the connection between the cable and your phone. Kindly look through the port to check it, as soon as you can spot any foreign particle there, try blowing a dry air to clear the port. You can also make use of cotton buds and little alcohol, or methylated spirit.

Replace damaged accessories.

With the guide mentioned above, check whether your data cable, charger, charging port, and power socket working. If they are damaged, replace them. You can get all original accessories for your TECNO, Infinix, and itel smartphone in any Carlcare shop near you.

Check that your phone isn't too hot.

Our phones have a heat protection mechanism where they stop charging when the temperature is too high. It is not recommended to use your phone while it is charging, especially for games, videos, surfing online, or other applications which use too much power.

If the phone is too hot, try quitting whatever you're doing, close all applications, turn on Airplane mode, remove the charger and leave it to relax for some minutes. You can as well shut down the phone to let it cool down and try charging it again.

More so, make sure there's proper ventilation while charging your phone. Charging it in an overstuffed area or under the soon will make the charging speed slow or make your phone won’t charge,  and may end up damaging the battery life.

Leave drained battery to charge for 5 minutes.

Now, this is applicable if your phone is totally dead before trying to charge it. If your phone automatically shut down after the battery is totally drained, it will take some time to start charging again. You may notice that the phone turns on for some seconds and later go off, this is not a problem - your battery is trying to regain its power. Leave the phone to charge for about 5minutes with the original charger, and then check if charges normally.

If it charges normally, the problem is caused by a totally drained battery. Try as much as to charge your phone as soon as the battery reaches 10% next time, to avoid the issue. Otherwise, change the charger or move to the next solution below.

Check the output current of the charger.

Normally, every single smartphone is built to charge at a particular current - some have a fast-charging capability and some doesn't have. If your phone is rated to charge at 6W (5V, 1.5A), using a charger rated at 18W (5V, 3A) will cause the phone to charge abnormally - it won't charge at all in some cases, and if it charges, it does it sporadically and will have a bad effect on the battery. Therefore, charging a phone of lower current with a high current charger will cause the battery not to charge and also have a bad effect on the battery, and vice-versa.

So, if you are using a mobile power supply or you just got a new charger, check whether the output current is the same as the original charger. If it is different, this may cause abnormal charging.

To confirm the output current, check the label printed at the back of the original charger. Compare the 'Output (Eg. Output: 5.0V, 2.0A)' with your new charger.
