Whatever font style looks stunning on your eyes, the good news is that you can apply them natively and comfortably on your TECNO phones. Unlike some Android devices, you don’t need root access or any third-party font app to stylize your texts on a TECNO phone. Let’s see how.
How to change font style on TECNO
On top of the Android OS, TECNO devices run the HiOS software, with a dedicated theming system that allows you to change the system font to whatever pleases you. The theme app comes preloaded with some font files to get you started, so you may not need to download fonts if the preloaded ones please you.
Here’s how to change font style on a TECNO device running HiOS 7.6. The procedures may differ slightly on your phone, but you’ll get the message.
- Ensure you're using HiOS Launcher (the stock app launcher for TECNO phones.)
- Now, swipe up on the home screen to open the app drawer.
- Launch “Hi Theme” from there.
- Tap “Discovery” in the bottom bar.
- Select “Font”
- You’ll see a grid of fonts to choose from in the next interface. If the fonts are showing the same style, ensure you have an active internet connection.
- Now, select your desired font from there to see how it’ll look like after applying it.
- If it pleases you, tap the “DOWNLOAD” button below the screen to get the font.
- Once downloaded, click “APPLY” to select the font style as your new system font.
That’s how to change font style on TECNO phones. You may repeat the step when you want to change the font style.
How to add more font styles to your TECNO phone
As of this time of writing, there are over 50 font styles you can choose to customize your phone on Hi Theme. However, everyone has different font styles that look pleasing to them (as said earlier). So, if none of the 50+ fonts looks aesthetic to you and you want to import yours, you’ve got a chance.
Natively, TECNO didn’t add a way to download and install custom fonts besides the neatly curated ones on Hi Theme. But there’s a workaround if you want to use a font style not available on Hi Theme. Here’s how:
- Launch Hi Theme from the app drawer, then go to Discover > Font.
- Select and download any font on the list but don’t apply it yet. (I downloaded the “Explorer” font in this case.)
- Install Solid Explorer from the Google Play Store
- Get the font file you want to use ready. You can download free fonts from sites like com, fontspace.com or googlefonts.com
- Most fonts will come in zip files. So, once downloaded, open it with Solid Explorer.
- You’ll see the font file with the .ttf extension inside the zip folder. Long-press it, then tap the Copy button below the screen to copy it.
- Now, swipe left on the screen to open another window to show the internal memory.
- Go to Android/data/com.transsion.magicfont/files/MagicFonts/download/fonts/en/
- Tap the yellow paste button in the bottom-right corner to paste the font there.
- Now, long-press TTF (or the font you downloaded on Hi Theme earlier) to select it, then click the pencil icon in the bottom bar to rename it to whatever you like.
- After that, long-press your new font file and rename it to “Explorer.ttf” (or the font you downloaded on Hi Theme earlier)
- Now, open Hi Theme go back to Discover > Font, and apply Explorer (or the font you just replaced.)
- If done correctly, your texts should display in the new custom font style.
That’s how to change font style on TECNO devices running Android 11 and later. The process is a bit different if you're on Android 10 or earlier as you don't have to manipulate the font file via the Android folder. Once you get to Step 8 above, navigate to MagicFonts/download/fonts/en/ instead.
Adding custom fonts on HiOS is trickier but worth doing if TECNO's choice of font styles doesn't look appealing to you.
