Several users have lamented over facing serious Bluetooth connection issues after upgrading their phones to the latest version of Android. Many said the Bluetooth device keeps disconnecting after a few minutes, while some noticed unusual latency, disruption in audio playback, sudden silence while using earbuds, phones not detecting new Bluetooth devices, and many others.

If you're unlucky to be one of these users plagued with Bluetooth problems, here are several ways to fix Bluetooth not working after phone update.

Part 1. Why did my Bluetooth suddenly stop working after update?

Before jumping on how to fix Bluetooth not working after phone update, it might interest you to know why this issue exists in the first place. And while it's usually difficult to pinpoint why you face Bluetooth connection issues after updating/upgrading your phone, the fact that it's a new software is enough to convince us it's a bug within the system.

Even so, your Bluetooth not working after phone update may result from any of these issues:

  • Minor system bug
  • Corrupted/outdated system cache
  • Development errors in the new software
  • Temporary startup issue with the Bluetooth software
  • Rare hardware issue.

Part 2. How do I fix my Bluetooth connection after update?

Whatever the problem is, the good news is that you can fix Android Bluetooth problems by yourself in most cases, and that's why this article exists. Below are solutions for Bluetooth not working after phone update. But before you try them, ensure you're running the latest software for your device, as OEMs can sometimes send a quick update to fix an issue if they're aware of it. Simply go to Settings > System > System Update to see if you have an update to install.

However, if installing the update didn't fix the issue, here's how you can resolve Bluetooth not working after phone update.

Note: We’ve used a TECNO CAMON 19 Pro to provide the guides in this article. Depending on your phone maker and software version, the process may be slightly different, but you can always use the Settings search bar to find equivalent system settings.

Method 1. Refresh the Bluetooth connection

When your phone's Bluetooth starts misbehaving after update, the first thing you want to do is to toggle off and on the Bluetooth function on your phone. It sounds simple, but all it needs sometimes is just a simple refresh.

On your Android phone, pull down from the top of the screen to open the Quick Settings panel, then tap the Bluetooth icon to turn it off. Tap it again after a few seconds to turn on Bluetooth, then try to reconnect with the device.

Method 2. Restart your phone and the Bluetooth device

If the problem persists after turning off/on the Bluetooth feature on your phone, take it a step further by rebooting your phone and the device you're trying to connect. As you probably already know, rebooting smart devices can often fix several software issues. And since you recently updated your smartphone, restarting it can help refresh and re-adjust the system to solve the current problem.

To restart your phone; hold down the Power button on the side, then use the Restart/Reboot function. Do the same for your Bluetooth gadget by turning it off and waiting for a few moments before turning it on again.

Try re-establishing the connection and testing for a couple of minutes to see if the Bluetooth problem persists.

Meanwhile, cultivating the habit of restarting your phone periodically can help fix many Android problems, even before they appear. You can make it easy by setting a Scheduled Restart cycle on your device via Settings > System > Scheduled Power on/off.

Method 3. Repair the Bluetooth device with your phone

Updating your smartphone usually introduces several systems and user-facing changes, including the ones that might corrupt your saved Bluetooth device and cause a connection issue. Nonetheless, you could fix them by removing and re-adding the Bluetooth device.

But how do you reset Bluetooth on Android after update? Here's how:

  • Open your device’s Settings app
  • Go to Connections > Bluetooth
  • Ensure the Bluetooth toggle is on so you can see your paired devices.
  • From there, find the affected Bluetooth device and tap the gear icon next to it.
  • Click the Forget button and confirm to unpair the device.
  • Now, ensure the Bluetooth device is active, then go back to the pairing menu to pair and reconnect it.

If everything goes right, you should have a working connection between your phone and the device by now. Otherwise, keep trying the solutions below to fix the problem.

Method 4. Reset the Android Bluetooth app

In case you don't know, every Android device has a system Bluetooth app that manages how your phone wirelessly transmits data with connected Bluetooth devices. Since most system apps get updated after major Android updates, chances are there might be an issue with the new Bluetooth app you got after updating your phone.

To fix this issue, try resetting the system Bluetooth app by clearing its stored data. Here’s how.

  • Open the Settings app
  • Click on Apps & Notifications
  • Tap App List
  • Now, tap the 3-dot menu button in the top right corner and select "Show system apps."
  • Click on the Search bar at the top and enter “Bluetooth,” then open the app.
  • Click on Storage & Cache.
  • Finally, tap Clear storage to reset it.

Simply restart your phone and try using the device again to see if it works well.

Method 5. Ensure the device you’re trying to connect has enough power

It can be so easy to blame the new Android software over your Bluetooth problems and forget the simple things like ensuring the device is active and ready to connect. Some Bluetooth devices don't work well when they're on low power, and to rule out that being the cause of the problem, we suggest you charge up the device first before trying to reconnect it with your phone.

Method 6. Reset your Bluetooth settings

Another thing to try if none of the above solutions work resetting your phone's connection settings; this includes your Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Mobile network settings. You'll lose all your saved Wi-Fi networks, connected Bluetooth device, and custom APNs, but that should be fair enough if it fixes the issue.

Here’s how to reset your connection settings on Android:

  • Launch the Settings
  • Scroll down and select
  • Tap Reset option
  • Click on Reset Wi-Fi, Mobile & Bluetooth
  • Tap Reset Settingsto complete the action.

We recommend you restart your phone and reconfigure your Bluetooth device to see if the issue is no more.

Method 7. Check for software updates or roll back to the previous version

Facing a problem after updating your phone is tricky and, sometimes, can only be fixed with another software update. Luckily, your manufacturer might be aware of the issue and has released or working on releasing an update to fix it. Try checking your device to see if you’ve got a software update and install it.

  • Go to Settings > System > System Update on your phone.
  • Tap Check for Update and install the latest version if available.

If you're running the latest version with the persistence of the Bluetooth problem, we recommend waiting for a while to see if your phone maker will fix the issue soon. Otherwise, you can try factory resetting your phone to solve the problem. But if none of them works, the last thing you can do is roll back your phone software to the previous version.

But unfortunately, downgrading your Android phone's software isn't as easy as updating it. You'll have to install the older firmware manually with a computer if your OEM makes the ROM available. But still, I'd recommend visiting the official service center for help.
