Turn off sleeping apps and Data Saver

On Android, there are various ways to manage your resources. These include an option to put an app to sleep when you're not using it, and an option to restrict background data access. When these two functions are activated, they may also affect the proper functionality of your Messenger app when you're not using it.

If the messenger sound is still not working after following the steps above, kindly turn off Battery Saver, and then disable Data Saver as well. You can find these two options in the quick-setting panel, just swipe down the panel and disable them.

Clear the app cache.

Just like every other Android app, Facebook Messenger stores some data temporarily, commonly known as cache, which makes the app run efficiently and use fewer resources. Even though this cache is useful for the app to run smoothly, it can sometimes make the app malfunction if it's too much or the cache is corrupted.
